How to Study in Canada Without IELTS

Published

on

For many students around the world, studying in Canada seems like a dream come true. The country’s well-developed education system, proximity to the United States, and pleasant weather have made it an ideal destination for students from all over the world.

Unfortunately, Canadian schools typically require all applicants to prove their English language abilities with scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

But if you’re not ready to submit your scores just yet, there are still plenty of options available to you.

Studying in Canada

If you want to study in Canada but don’t want to take an English test like IELTS, you may be out of luck. If English is your second language, there are two options:

  • You can prove you’re fluent by providing a certificate showing that you scored at least 5 on each of these sections: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
  • Get a partner who is willing to sponsor your immigration through their work. If you go with option one, remember it has to be TOEFL or IELTS – not both. Also note that once you’ve taken an English proficiency exam once (either on its own or as part of completing another education program), it won’t count towards further entries into Canada.

Applying to University

If you are looking to study in Canada, your high school grades, SAT scores and ACT scores (if you took it) will get you only so far.

In most provinces, universities require students from foreign countries to prove their proficiency by submitting an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of at least 7.0.

Finding Accommodation

One thing most international students want when coming to Canada is affordable housing. Accommodation costs vary depending on what province you’re looking at, but a safe bet is around $500 per month for a house or apartment, $700 if you want utilities included.

Try sites like Kijiji and Craigslist to get an idea of what’s available in your area.

Studying at University

If you’re studying at a Canadian university, then finding a course that will accept a TOEFL or IELTS score is easy.

But if you’re enrolled at a CEGEP, College, Community College or private institution, then it becomes far more difficult. Not all institutions in Canada recognize English proficiency exams like TOEFL and IELTS.

So how do you gain admission into these institutions?

Common Mistakes Made by Foreign Students

Studying abroad can be a truly life-changing experience. It exposes you to new cultures, different languages and opens your eyes up to opportunities that wouldn’t have been available back home.

But going abroad is a massive undertaking, so planning ahead and being prepared is crucial. Make sure you do not make these four common mistakes when studying in Canada without IELTS.

Other Resources

If you’re not a native English speaker, you need official proof of your language skills if you want to apply for a Canadian study permit.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most popular ways to show that you’re proficient enough for academic studies, and it’s widely accepted by universities and colleges in Canada.

Conclusion

If you are wanting to study in a Canadian university or college, but are not comfortable with taking an English proficiency test, there is an alternative.

Many Canadian institutions have what is called an Alternate Assessment process. This requires you prove that your native language skills are strong enough that they can be used as a substitute for an English proficiency test.

The requirements and process vary from school to school, so it’s important to do your research before you begin applying.
